Factors that exacerbate the vulnerability of these children recruited or introduction to crime, include substance abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, child labour as well as trafficking are the lack of employment opportunities in their community. The HIV/ Aids pandemic (66 deaths recorded in 20053 ), child headed households (1,2%of total population4), the abject poverty (7,56% of households have no income and only 863 people receive social grants), domestic violence and alcohol abuse – all of which contribute to the disintegration of families as well as the increase in crime. The socio-economic reality compels these children to seek a means to a perceived better life and it is at this juncture that they enter domestic servitude, crime, sex work etc. The socio economic realities create a perfect climate for exploitative practices that are directed at children.
